I was lucky enough to get a formal music education at the University of Miami (FL) where I majored in Studio Music and Jazz. Then I spent 10 years playing in clubs and learned how to make records with a TASCAM 80-8 1/2" 8-track recorder. My post graduate education continued when I made my way to New York in 1986 and began working on rap records, R&B and dance projects with drum machines, samplers and sequencers. It has been an interesting musical odyssey!

The sounds of hiphop are the sound of music in the 90's. Where these sounds are cross-pollinating with other styles is where some really cool stuff is happening. Among others, Sheryl Crow, Beck and Alanis Morrisette would not have been possible without the influence of rap and hiphop music.

There just isn't much that hasn't already been done with guitars, drums and bass. I treat these sounds and the new technological toys I use to get them like another option in my sonic arsenal. They are there if I need them, like a strat versus a Les Paul or a Fender Twin versus a Vox AC-30 amp. The song is still the foundation that everything else must be true to. I simply have more ways to teach an' old rock and roll dog some new tricks!

Most of these Real Audio examples are 1:00 to 1:30 long. All of these require a 28.8 modem. When you click on the title you want to hear, a RealAudio screen pops up and shows you that it is loading the .ra file and it's progress. It generally takes about a minute to load and then the RealAudio player screen pops up starts to play the file. There are buttons to click to stop, play, rewind and fast forward. You can also grab the bar that moves as the file plays, and drag it to some other spot in the song. It's that easy and usually that fast. The MP3 files are 64kbps stereo files.

Keep writing and recording. Peace, the Doctor.

Jeff Krassner
Jeff approached me in the summer of 1998 about producing a followup to his first self-released LP, "Strong For You", which was a more traditional R&B recording. He wanted this record to be more current mainstream and we produced the tracks one at a time over the course of the next 16 months. "Maybe Love'll Make Sense To Me" was the first track we completed and it wound up in the 1999 film, "TRICK".

The Scoldees
We recorded these three songs over the summer and early fall of 1999. Great vocals in the tradition of Crosby, Stills and Nash meet Beck. Maybe I went a little too far with the bumble bee noises... but I had a lot of fun working with Nancy, Jack, Ted and JC. "Cellophane Man" made it onto the record intact. These are bits of my versions of "I Go Crazy" and "Inside". Consider them top secret remixes.

Mayfield
This is a remix of the first single off the debut LP from ex-Tears For Fears member, Curt Smith. The album is called Mayfield, out on Curt's label, Zerodisc. Quite by coincidence, Curt heard the Mike Errico songs I produced and asked me if I'd be interested in working with him. You bet. This file takes a little longer to download but it's worth it!

Drew Young
Drew is from New Orleans by way of Atlanta and Nashville so there is some swamp in this stuff... we call it acid country! It's sort of Tricky meets Lisle Lovett.

  Remembrance......................... :48 RA 3.0/28.8 mono
Released the CD on his own label, CS Records, June 1998. Buy it here: www.drewyoung.com

JoyDrop(Canada)
Everyone in this group brings something vital to the dinner table. This band has great songs and rocks hard and melodically. I helped them rearrange the songs, added the loops, programmed beats and hiphop dust and mixed the whole shebang.

Mike Errico
Mike plays acoustic guitar and performs solo. He uses many interesting open tunings, plays a mean harmonica and writes story songs for the 90's. If you like Beck, Dave Matthews and Alanis Morissette, you'll like this EP we did together, available at his website http://www.errico.com
